This doesn’t mean they have to know their lives are unfair or be ready to deal with it, only that there should be a way for them to emotionally handle their circumstances. Just like we don’t enjoy complainers in real life, the characters should handle their lives with some sort of acceptance for their circumstances. If your characters are going to be put through some rough scenarios, the readers want to see them deal with that with emotion and action in a real way. Your characters shouldn’t complain extensively. Here are a few ways to make sure your characters always stay slightly to the positive side on readers mind: And when it’s too much to think about protecting everyone, they protect who they can.īut there are several pitfalls to morally ambiguous characters that should be remembered. They all want to prevent others from experiencing what they have experienced. We love them because they all want to bring good to the world. I was rooting for all of them because each of them, on some level, want to go back to who they were before they were traumatized, when they could be objectively considered “good people.” The characters aren’t what we would consider “good people.” They sometimes seem extreme, but this serves the purpose of softening the harsh reality of their lives. With so many characters with so many different pasts, it could have been daunting to try and have them all interact together all the time, but Sakavic knows exactly what each character will do and how they will behave. Their trauma is present in every moment of every day, affecting all of their decisions and relationships. The Foxhole Court isn’t full of characters with past trauma that only affects them when they need a big reveal with their significant other. And nearly every single character in this series is morally ambiguous. I’m obsessed with the characters and the love story to the point where I’ve looked up buying fan art for the series on Etsy. I stayed up until 4:00 am reading and then immediately downloaded the third. It was like reading Game of Thrones without watching the TV show first.īut that all changes with the second book. There were too many characters in too many different places with too many intersecting backstories. I’m not going to lie, the first half of The Foxhole Court was confusing and over-the-top. And, because I'm all about using real examples within your genre to model your methods against, I want to talk about the All for the Game series. However, it turns out that Tyrion Lannister, Jesse Pinkman, and Katniss Everdeen all have a few things in common. From Breaking Bad to The Hunger Games to Game of Thrones, we love a rough character we can root for. Morally ambiguous characters are trending right now, and for good reason.
