Local weather reporters usually know of local peculiarities in weather patterns.Speed-read websites, ebooks and documents. Foul weather often produces great wave photographs if you are at the sea shore.Īs for a reliable source of weather, I use my local TV station's web site and watch their news broadcasts. So unless the weather is not fit for man or beast, I would go out and see if anything interesting happens like a rainbow. It became one of his signature photographs. When he got there, it was still overcast but he started shooting anyway and on the last shot, the sun broke through and gave him a beautiful rainbow that end on the top of the monastery. ![]() He headed for the spot that would provide the best light and composition IF the sun broke through. Not good for photography at all but he decided to take a chance. When he arrived at the monastery the weather was cloudy and misty. Galen Rowell's story of how he got his famous Potage Monastery photograph shows the rewards of risking the weather. Some of the most dramatic photographs are taken in foul weather. What you see in a comercial forecast is that most likely' scenario but the original probabilistic model will have forecast a much wider range of possibilities.Ī fair weather photographer will only get fair quality photographs. The forecast is then a range of possibilities from which the weather forecaster has to pick what he or she thinks is the most likely range of outcomes. They do this by running the weather model a number of times (usually 24 times) with the imputs varying according to how the previous forecast diverged from reality. ![]() As a result most primary weather forecasts these days are 'probabilistic' - they give a range of possibilities - say a 20% chance of rain or a 50% chance of cloud etc. (Hence always use the most recent forecast). The atmosphere is a chaotic system so that a small deviation from reality in a forecast leads to bigger and bigger errors as you go thorugh a forecast. However the exception is that some secondary services are specialists for say coastal weather or mountain weather so may look in more detail these areas than national forecasts can.ĭespite all the high tech data gathering and computing power used in weather forecasts no weather forecast is ever 100% definite. The local services then just take the model outputs and interpret them as they are always downstream of the original forecast. These data streams go into forecasting models on which all weather forecasts these days are based. In addition the people who do the forecasts at these hubs know most about how the model forecasts are to be interpreted. It is always best to go to the primary source of the data as they get data streams from all sorts of places - satellites, planes, ships, remote sensors etc. Most secondary services such as weather channels or commercial weather forecatsers just use data from the WMO hubs such as NOAA and UKMO. ![]() This divides the world into regions as shown on their website. Weather services are national but cooperate globally using the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). For UK and Europe I always use the UK Met Office forecasts. I sugest you use the most recent forecasts from primary forecasting hubs or specialist services. ![]()
